She went around the neighbourhood knocking on people's doors, asking them to sign a flyer. When she got to a house with a steep driveway she knocked, and an elderly lady answered the door. They started talking and the lady asked my mom to step inside. They sat down at the kitchen table and the subject landed on us -the kids- and what our plan was for when we finished school. When it came to me, mom told the lady that I'm planning on being a photographer. The lady heard this and said that her husband had just got a vintage camera, some gear that went with it, and an old video camera from a close friend who had passed. They didn't know what to do with them and she wanted me to come and take a look and see if I had any use for them.
My mom came home and told me about the cameras, but that I would have to wait a few weeks to see them until the lady's husband returned home from a trip. So I was surprised when the lady called today and said that her husband was home and I could come and take a look at the cameras.
I walked down the road and up their driveway my heart pounding. I rang, knocked at the door and waited. 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 3 minutes. With my overactive brain I thought of every scenario of why she wasn't answering the door. After another minute and another good knocking I heard a faint "Come in". I tried the handle and the door was locked. "It's locked" I called back. She came and unlocked the door, let me into her house and had me sit down at the kitchen table. She showed me the cameras and together we tried to figure out what all the pieces were. A little later when everything had been gone through and examined, she asked "Would you like to take them?" I said yes and she passed the bags over to me. "Thank you so much!" I said and she drove me home.
My dad and I looked through all the gear again. We got almost everything working, except for two flashes and we didn't have a VHS for the video camera. Aside from that, I thought they were really cool and although I'm not going to be using them I can add them to my collection of old cameras.
So, I guess there are benefits to your mom bragging a little bit about you;)
