Today my family opened Christmas presents, and I know what you're thinking it's not the 25th yet, but we had a reason...
My younger sister Abby is a die-hard Oilers fan and all she really wanted for Christmas was tickets to an Oilers game. So a few months ago I got tickets for her and Dad to go to the Oilers and Bluejackets game tonight.
You know when you're trying to keep a secret from a person who knows you so well that they can tell that you are hiding something? Ya, that's Abby. She knows when I'm lying or not telling her something. So keeping this secret from her was hard.
Last night after dinner, my brother pretty much gave it away three times, and let's just say I wasn't happy about it. As I was sitting in my room making a very last-minute gift for Christmas and Abby comes into my room with the biggest smile on her face.
"Mom and Dad got me Oilers tickets! I just know it! Riley said that we were opening presents early because of something special!"
Dying inside I just shrugged and said,
"Naa. The cookie exchange for church is tomorrow."
Bad cover-up, I know. I'm not a very good liar... but it worked! She believed me and didn't suspect anything when Riley gave it away the other two times.
Let's jump ahead to the next day. My plan was to give the tickets to her in one of her gifts, but plans
changed last minute because she suspected. When all the presents were opened and everybody was
putting their gifts away I brought a box out and gave it to her.
"I forgot about this one. It was in the very back of my closet."
"Uhh, ok!" she replied.
She got the box open and saw the small piece of paper that had the Oilers vs. Bluejackets logo on it.
"REALLY! Are you serious!!!" she said and burst into tears.
After a quick sob-sesh, she came and hugged me.
"That's why your other presents weren't very nice..." I said with a grin.
"I don't care," she replied.
"Best present ever?"
"Umm let me think... ARE YOU KIDDING? YES OF COURSE!!!"
So, if you ever ask her what the best present she ever received was, it will most definitely be this one.
